I've also noticed Wal-Mart starting to blend in to its surroundings better. It's new store in Squamish BC (a mountain town near Whistler) looks like a log cabin -- or a cross between a Wal-Mart and a log cabin, anyway.
Around the world, I've also seen it -- a Macdonald's in Krakow Poland serving burgers from inside a historic brick building on an historic, narrow lane off the main square.

Fry's (big electronics retailer in the US) often makes its stores unique to thier local culture. The Dallas store is a cattle ranch, Austin's is all about the music, and the one in City of Insustry is industrial revolution chic.
I know its a bit gimmicky, but its more interesting than the bland sameness of other large retailer store designs.
(the Fry's in Irving Texas is just a regular old big box store--I like to belive its actually a themed store that is a comment on the stip-malliness of surrounding Irving)
Interesting. Fry's near my house in Tucson was just a big ugly box -- at least when I lived there. It would be nice to see more supermarket chains doing something to blend in and acknowledge the architectural and community heritage and culture of the area.
